Are there any drug interactions?

Although generally considered as safe, SAM-e has not been evaluated in children or pregnant or lactating women. People with bipolar (manic) depression or who are experiencing severe issues with mood, including thoughts of suicide should not take SAM-e except under a doctor's supervision.

SAM-e should not be used when taking St. John's Wort.  SAM-e should be used with caution and only under healthcare provider's supervision when taking MAOI drugs, like Marplan, Nardil, Parnate, Manerix.  Individuals on other medications should consult their primary healthcare provider prior to starting SAM-e to check for other potential interactions.

What are the food sources of SAMe?

Sam-e is not found in foods but rather produced by the body from ATP and the amino acid methionine. While methionine is found in protein containing foods, consuming more methionine either from methionine rich foods or supplements does not increase SAM-e, as the rate limiting step is not methionine supply, but the enzyme that converts methionine to SAM-e.

Suggested Use: Start with 1 tablet per day. The best time to take SAM-e is on an empty stomach at least 30 minutes before a meal. Clinical studies indicate that benefits are most likely evident after 7–14 days of supplementation. If benefits are not achieved within two weeks, you may require a higher level of supplementation. To determine the proper level of supplementation that works for you, gradually increase the number of tablets (maximum 1600 mg /day) until benefits are achieved.
